Why Go Greek?

This one is for all y'all who are entering college and are curious about Greek life, or those who are returning to school but wanting a new and unique experience.

I have had multiple young women, as well as one young man, emailing me recently about joining Greek life. As one of them put it, "I'd like to know why you're so obsessed with Greek life and if it's worth joining." Yes, I may be obsessed, but for a good reason. Greek life is everything I could have asked for and more.




I figured that I could go on and on with how I felt like I found a home in my sorority and probably shed a lot of a few tears, but then I decided to ask my followers why they chose to go Greek. Hearing the different reasons they have may help different people decide to join the Greek community. 

Here are some of my favorite responses:

@FaithNevill: to get connected on campus & make instant friends. I could never imagine the amazing experience & sisterhood that would come

@TXSrattitude: Love. Labor. Learning. Loyalty.

@ms_abreezy: wanted to start a new tradition in my family

@melissachapmann: I went to school far away from home so I went Greek to find a family that would be there for me while I was away from my own.

@SratHardFratOft: I went Greek because I'm from a small town far from school and wanted friends I could have forever

@Lea_Renaee: to become a part of something bigger than myself

@Meggo_11: I wanted a family away from home & to make a difference on my campus & in the surrounding community.

@c_canger: to follow in my sister's footsteps.


@mah_randa: being an only child, I wanted to see what it's like to have sisters!

As you can see, there are many reasons why Greek life members decided to go Greek. However, there are a few reasons that most of us agree on. Let's hit home the big points. 

Scholarship, leadership, philanthropy, career opportunities, and life-long friendship await you if you choose to go Greek. Your sisters or brothers will encourage your academic success. You will have lots of opportunities to grow as a leader in various chapter positions. Your chapter's philanthropy will offer you the chance to give back. In the future, your Greek affiliation will open doors for you that you never knew existed. Arguably most important of all, you will create quality friendships that will last for a lifetime.
